The month has barely even started and you’re already out of cash? Don’t worry! Hong Kong might seem like an overly expensive city, but even here there are plenty of things you can do for free!
Do good and have fun
Want to do something meaningful in your free time? Start volunteering! There are numerous organization in Hong Kong that can use your help. If you love pets you can ask your local shelter if they need help or sign up at Hong Kong Dog Rescue to walk dogs. Or join the amazing people at The Guest Room who organize handouts to help out the homeless in Sham Shui Po and Happy Valley. For more opportunities check out Hands On Hong Kong.
One of the best things about Hong Kong is the fact that city and nature are so close together. Chill in Tamar Park, take a ferry to Cheung Chau or go camping in Sai Kung and you’ll feel like you’re in another world!

Movies? For free? Yes it’s possible! This Meetup group organizes free movie screenings twice a week. Though buying some drinks at the bar is encouraged, the admission is entirely free. And as a bonus, you’ll meet some new friends!
Free museum Wednesday
Did you know that many museums are free of charge on Wednesdays? For example, the Hong Kong Museum of History, Hong Kong Heritage Museum and Hong Kong Science Museum don’t charge anything on Wednesdays. And some museums are free regardless of the day of the week! For a full list, see here.
Launch & Birthday Parties
Keep an eye out for launch parties and anniversaries. Many companies will give away some free beers and snacks to celebrate their successes. The best ones coming up in June are Munchies Birthday Party (free donuts!), Shake ’em buns anniversary (free beer AND fried chicken :O!)
